Canada Summer Games Torch Relay program revealed

  • Details regarding the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games Torch Relay was released today.
  • The Roly McLenahan Torch’s journey will begin in late spring 2022 with a lighting ceremony in Ottawa, before heading to Montreal, where it will embark on the CSL Welland ship at St. Lambert Lock and make its way to the Niagara Region via the St. Lawrence Seaway.
  • The torch will then disembark from the ship at the Welland Canal, prior to visiting each of Niagara’s twelve municipalities before making its way to the Meridian Centre on August 6, 2022 for the Opening Ceremony.

Canada Summer Games gets additional $1.1 million

  • The federal government announced it will be funding an additional $1.1 million to support the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.
  • The additional money is expected to help cover the extra costs resulting from the pandemic.

Canada Games Park receives major donation

  • The Walker Family and Walker Industries has made a $3 million donation for Canada Games Park beside Brock University.
  • The sport and recreation complex at Canada Games Park will be named the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre in recognition of the contribution.
  • The agreement will also see the plaza on the site named the Walker Founders Plaza.
  • The facility is scheduled to host a number of Canada Games events in August 2022 and will be available for community use after the Games has ended.

Canada Games Park on track to be completed by end of 2021

  • Canada Games Park beside Brock University is on schedule for substantial completion by Fall 2021 and will be fully completed by the end of January 2022.
  • The 200,000 square foot facility will consist of a twin ice-pad arena, a health and well-being centre, a 200m indoor track, sport offices, and a multipurpose fieldhouse that will feature a parasport gymnasium. 
  •  Outside there will be six competition beach volleyball courts, a cycling centre, and a track-and-field facility that includes a full 400m track.
  • The facility will host athletics, box lacrosse, wrestling, beach volleyball, and indoor volleyball for the Canada Summer Games taking place August 6-21, 2022

Management of Canada Games Park finalized

  • Niagara Region, St. Catharines, Thorold and Brock University have entered into a long-term agreement to manage and operate Canada Games Park.
  • The agreement will ensure all four partners are involved in the governance of Canada Games Park until at least the year 2050.
  • The facility will be governed by a management committee with the day-to-day operations being managed by an independent operator.
  • The complex will include a twin-pad arena, a 200-metre indoor track, a multipurpose fieldhouse, 6 outdoor beach volleyball courts and a 400-metre track-and-field facility.
  • Substantial completion is expected by October 6 with full completion by the end of January 2022.
