City funding available for community gardens

  • St. Catharines is providing funding for the building or expanding of community gardens.
  • Incorporated charities and not-for-profit groups can apply for matching funds from the city to cover up to half of eligible start-up costs, including lumber, soil, seeds, rain barrels and other materials and equipment.
  • The city hopes to encourage more community gardens for the purposes of growing produce.

Four year-old boy dies in sledding accident

  • On Monday at approximately 4:15pm emergency crews responded to a call in the area of Greenlane Road and Bartlett Street in Lincoln.
  • A 4-year-old boy was in critical condition after the snow sled he was riding entered the road way and he was struck by a passing pickup truck.
  • The child was transported to a local hospital and despite the efforts of all the medical personnel, the child died from his injuries.

COVID-19 Update for Jan 31, 2021

  • In Canada, there were 3,924 new COVID-19 cases Sunday bringing the total of confirmed cases to 778,972.
  • There were 90 new reported deaths Sunday in Canada and over the past seven days there have been a total of 938 COVID-19 related deaths. 
  • Here in Niagara, there were 67 new cases on Sunday and a total of 1,156 active cases.
  • A total of 4,223 vaccination doses have been administered in Niagara.

City seeks input on new recreation facility allocation policy

  • The city of St. Catharines is seeking public input for a new recreation facility allocation policy.
  • The new policy will include all city recreation facilities, creating a uniform process to ensure facility use is fair for all users.
  • In late 2020 the city held consultations with existing user and stakeholder groups and is now expanding those consultations to the public through an online survey.
  • Residents can take the survey by visiting engagestc.ca/RecFacilities before March 1, 2021.

COVID-19 vaccination clinic at St. Catharines arena

  • Niagara Health will open a new COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Seymour Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre.
  • The clinic will be available by appointment only for health care workers including long-term care and high-risk retirement home staff and essential caregivers, and Niagara Health staff and physicians.
  • The clinic will use a full rink as well as space in the main atrium and will replace the current clinic held at the St. Catharines Hospital.
  • The larger clinic will allow for more people to be vaccinated each day and will maximize physical distancing.

Niagara Region approves 2021 Budget

  • Niagara Regional Council has approved the 2021 operating budget.
  • The operating budget will result in an overall property tax increase of 1.8% percent, which translates into a $29 tax increase for an average property assessed at $278,764.
  • Council also approved the use of $4.3 million in reserves to reduce the impact on taxpayers.
  • The operating budget contains a tax levy of $405.3 million, which funds the daily business of Niagara Region, its boards and agencies.
