  • City Awarded Minto Cup – St. Catharines has been chosen as the host location for the 2025 Minto Cup, the National Junior A Lacrosse Championship of Canada. The event will take place August 16-24, 2025 with a nine-day celebration of Canada’s national summer game, including cultural gatherings, fan festivals and more. (Invest in St. Catharines)
  • Police To Keep Surplus – Niagara Regional Police will be allowed to keep more than $1.9 million of the year-end budget surplus from 2023 to cover costs associated with implementing changes under the Community Safety and Policing Act. Under the Act, police must purchase new equipment such as C8 military-style rifles and ammunition and to equip patrol vehicles with mounts for the rifles. (St. Catharines Standard)
  • Apology Demanded At Region – The Niagara Palestine Coalition is demanding an apology from St. Catharines Mayor Matt Siscoe and Regional Councillor Laura Ip after Siscoe asked to have a motion for a binding ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict removed from the council agenda. Council voted in favour of removing the motion 26-2. (The River)
  • Bridge Closure Extended – The St. Lawrence Seaway is extending the closure of the Allanburg Bridge on Highway 20 until 4 p.m. on Feb. 15. Originally the bridge was scheduled to reopen on Feb 13. (Thorold Today)
  • Solar Eclipse Activities – The city of Port Colborne will host a number of activities at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre for the solar eclipse on April 8. One of the attractions will be an inflatable 4K planetarium where planetarium staff will share constellation stories, northern light insights and more. (Niagara this Week)

  • Radio Stations Sold – Bell Media is selling 45 radio stations, including 610 CKTB, Move 105.7 and 97.7 HTZ-FM in St. Catharines. Those three stations will be sold to Oakville-based Whiteoaks Communications Group Ltd, who owns a Christian-based station in Toronto and a multicultural station in Mississauga.   • Student Job Fair – The city of St. Catharines will be hosting a summer student job fair for post-secondary students Feb 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre. (City of St. Catharines)
  • Doctor Shortage – The Niagara Region’s doctor recruitment specialist said the region is short about 81 physicians despite the success of recruiting doctors to Niagara. Recently, the region has been trying to recruit Canadians who are doctors overseas as they were in Ireland last October to bring Canadian doctors back to Niagara. (The River)
  • Record Breaking Day – Today will be a record breaking day for the temperature in St. Catharines as the expected daytime high is 14 C. The previous record for Feb 9 was in 1925 when the high was 12 C. (Niagara this Week)
  • Funding For Abandoned Wells – The Niagara Region is getting $280,000 from the province to manage abandoned oil and gas wells. The money will be used to buy equipment and for training for emergency response staff. (Niagara this Week)
