  • Service Ontario Relocation – Niagara Centre MPP Jeff Burch is criticizing the provincial government for closing Service Ontario locations owned by small business owners and reallocating the service within Staples Canada stores. Minister Todd McCarthy responded by saying the model with Staples offers extended hours, more accessibility, more parking and the convenience of online booking. (St. Catharines Standard)
  • Bowl For Kids Sake – The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara’s annual Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser will take place on Feb. 27 and March 2 at Parkway Social in St. Catharines. Teams of four to six people can register for a Bowl for Kids Sake slot by raising a minimum of $300. (Niagara this Week)
  • COVID Protester Appeal – The Crown is appealing the acquittal of Cullen McDonald, who was found not guilty of committing a common nuisance in relation to organizing a large gathering in Niagara Falls during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. McDonald was found guilty of the same charge for a rally in St. Catharines a week after the Niagara Falls event. (St. Catharines Standard)

  • Man Rescued From Burning House – Firefighters rescued a man from a burning house in Port Colborne Monday afternoon. The man was rescued from the second floor of the house and was transported to hospital in critical but stable condition. (CHCH)
  • Thorold Begins Water Study – The City of Thorold has initiated a combined water and wastewater study of Thorold’s water distribution and wastewater collection system. Four Public Information Centres will be held to present details about the study and allow the public the opportunity to share comments and concerns. (City of Thorold)
  • Police Cleared – The SIU has cleared the Niagara Regional Police regarding an incident where a man allegedly charged at police while holding a knife and was shot and killed by police. The SIU reported that the incident happened while police were responding to a domestic disturbance where the man attacked a family member with a knife. (Giant FM)
  • CAO Recruitment Begins – Niagara-on-the-Lake has formed a committee involving the lord mayor and three councillors to interview and review candidates who apply for the position of chief administrative officer. The town currently has an interim CAO after former CAO Marnie Cluckie announced she was resigning late last year. (Niagara-on-the-Lake Local)
  • Monster Trucks Coming – The Monster Trucks All Out Tour will be held at the Meridian Centre on May 11. The event will have lights, music and monster truck mayhem. Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster. (Niagara this Week)

Sports Update

  • IceDogs Split Week – The Niagara IceDogs split four games last week defeating Erie 6-1 and Oshawa 4-3 in OT before losing to Brantford 5-1 and Oshawa 6-0. The IceDogs remain in last place in the Eastern Conference and the OHL. Niagara is 6 points out of the last playoff spot with 13 games remaining in the regular season.
