St. Catharines Fire Service, dispatch using location app to locate people in need of assistance

  • St. Catharines Fire services is encouraging everyone in the areas serviced by St. Catharines Fire Services to download a new app called what3words.
  • The free app is available for iOS and Android or online at what3words.com and generates a unique three-word identified to pinpoint someone’s location if they are unaware of their location and require assistance. 
  •  Emergency services can then accurately and quickly be dispatched to the precise location of an incident.
  • The technology will be used by St. Catharines Fire Services, along with the 11 other fire departments which use the St. Catharines emergency dispatch service.

NRPS Investigating Robbery of a Senior Citizen in Niagara Falls

  • On May 23 between 3:00PM and 3:15PM, an 88 year-old male was walking on Dunn Street near Dorchester Road when a black van stopped and a female suspect exited the vehicle.
  • The female had a handful of gold plated jewelry and asked the male if he would give her $20-$40 for it so that she could get gas.  
  • The female then grabbed the male’s hand and pulled off two rings from the male’s fingers.
  • The female suspect has been described as South Asian, 5’10, heavy/muscular build wearing a dark coloured Abaya.

St. Catharines asking for feedback on Climate Adaptation Plan

  • The City of St. Catharines is hosting an online open house from April 30 to May 14, allowing residents the opportunity to review a new Climate Adaptation Plan (CAP), ask questions and provide feedback.
  • By 2050, it is expected that St. Catharines will experience hotter summers; warmer and wetter winters; longer and wetter springs; and shorter falls.
  • As well, increased extreme weather events will take place including flooding, heat waves and intense winter storms.
  • In response, 28 action items have been developed, ranging from increasing the urban tree canopy to shoreline protection.
