Unvaccinated 8.4 times more likely to get COVID-19

  • Health Minister Christine Elliott said that there are currently 295 people in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19 and 192 people with the virus are being treated in the ICU. (610 CKTB)
  • Rescue crews searched the Niagara River today after surveillance cameras caught a car with two occupants plunging past the end of a road and into the water on the American side. (Niagara this Week)
  • The roof on the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre at Canada Games Park beside Brock University will be covered with sod, which helps control stormwater and reduces energy costs. The 19,500-square-metre facility has a number of other sustainability features. (St. Catharines Standard)
  • The Region announced that only 358 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered on Monday, the lowest daily today since February when there was a vaccine shortage. Currently, 27% of Niagara residents have yet to receive their first dose and one-third of residents have not been fully vaccinated. (St. Catharines Standard)

85 tickets and warnings issued on back to school traffic safety day

  • On Tuesday, the Niagara Regional Police Service conducted its 21st annual back to school traffic safety and awareness day to remind drivers about safe driving habits.
  • A total of 85 tickets and warnings were issued.
  • There were 42 tickets issued for speeding, two for distracted driving, two for not properly wearing their seatbelts and one for passing a stopped school bus. 
  • There were also 15 tickets issued for other various traffic offences and a total of 23 written warnings.
  • As well, two drivers were arrested for impaired driving and two additional drivers were charged with driving while under suspension.

  • There were 495 people being treated in Ontario’s hospitals on Friday for COVID-19 with 169 of those patients in the ICU. Of the 326 patients being treated outside of the ICU, about 89% are not fully vaccinated. (610 CKTB)
  • For the second straight year, the Labour Day parade and carnival in Merritton has been cancelled due to COVID-19. (Niagara this Week)
  • According to the latest Leger poll, 81% of Canadians support a provincial vaccine passport system for indoor places including bars, restaurants, gyms, concert halls and festivals. (Thorold Today)
  • Niagara’s acting medical officer of health, Dr. Mustafa Hirji, said reports are now showing that we could be back to the number of COVID-19 cases we had at the peak of the third wave by mid-October. (St. Catharines Standard)
