Niagara’s first case of West Nile Virus

  • Niagara Region Public Health has received its first report of a laboratory-confirmed case of West Nile Virus infection for 2021.
  • Although most people infected with West Nile Virus do not get sick, 20 per cent of people suffer flu-like symptoms and fatigue, and one per cent suffer serious infections of the brain such as meningitis.
  • Public Health advises residents to drain standing water, repair damaged screens and avoid mosquito-infested areas.
  • It’s also advisable to wear long-sleeved shirts, hats, long pants, socks and shoes that cover the feet as well as use insect repellants containing Deet or Icaridin.

  • Brock University is hoping for better behaviour from their students after a number of tickets and four arrests were made last weekend as police had to deal with off-campus parties in Thorold. (610 CKTB)
  • The annual Thorold Santa Clause Parade may be cancelled this year as the organizing committee is down to just two individuals and without more volunteers the parade will not happen. (Thorold Today)
  • 87% of District School Board of Niagara staff have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and schools have purchased additional tests for unvaccinated staff members to take. Despite the criticism, the Board said they are doing everything possible to keep students safe . (610 CKTB)

Niagara Health re-opening St. Catharines COVID-19 assessment centre

  • Niagara Health is re-opening its COVID-19 drive-through assessment centre at the St. Catharines Site on Tuesday, Sept. 21 due to an increase in demand for testing.
  • The St. Catharines Site assessment centre will be in addition to the Greater Niagara General assessment centre in Niagara Falls.
  • The operating hours for both locations will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, including all holidays.
  • Appointments can be booked online or by calling 905-378-4647 ext. 42819.
  • Walk-ins will not be accepted at either location.
