  • The City of St. Catharines will be spending more than $1 million to repair sidewalks and to build two kilometres worth of new sidewalks in the city. (St. Catharines Standard)

However, Dr. Mustafa Hirji said waiting at least 21 days before moving to the next stage is important so the impact of the reopening on COVID-19 case counts can be properly analyzed. Special illuminations of Niagara Falls on Canada Day

  • The Niagara Falls Illumination Board will be alternating illuminations on Canada Day. 
  • Both the Canadian Horseshoe and American Falls will be lit in red and white from 9-9:30pm; 10-10:30pm and 11-11:30pm for Canada Day.
  • The Falls will also be lit in orange from 9:30-10pm; 10:30-11pm and 11:30-midnight to recognize the contributions of Indigenous Peoples and in support of the courage and trauma faced by many.
  • After consultation with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, this special illumination was decided upon as a symbol of solidarity and in recognition of Canada Day as an opportunity for reflection and learning.

Niagara Region takes snapshot of homelessness

  • On March 23, the Niagara Region, alongside agencies from Niagara’s Homelessness Servicing System, took part in the third annual Niagara Counts homelessness Point-in-Time (PiT) Count. 
  • The PiT Count provides a snapshot of homelessness at a single point in time and is a provincial and federal requirement.
  • The PIT count revealed that at least 665 people were experiencing homelessness in Niagara compared to 625 in 2018.
  • Of those 665 people, 121 were children aged 0-15 years and 76 were youth aged 16-24.
  • 79 per cent of respondents considered Niagara to be their home community.

  • The City of Thorold has decided to cancel it’s Canada Day celebrations in light of the discovering of unmarked graves at two residential schools. (Thorold News)
  • The owners of the former GM site on Ontario Street has presented a plan to prevent PCBs from entering a municipal storm sewer, which has been approved by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. It will likely take some time before the problem is completely fixed. (St. Catharines Standard)
  • A Leger poll commissioned by Postmedia found that the vast majority of Canadians disagree with cancelling Canada Day as only 14 per cent of Canadians back some move to eliminate the national holiday. According to the poll, most Canadians surveyed said they intended to celebrate Canada Day. (National Post)

Lynn Guerriero named President and CEO of Niagara Health

  • The Board of Directors of Niagara Health announced that it has named Lynn Guerriero their new President and CEO on a permanent basis.
  • Guerriero joined Niagara Health as President in February 2020 and transitioned into the role of Interim CEO earlier this year. 
  • Guerriero came to Niagara Health with more than 30 years of leadership, management and clinical experience within a variety of healthcare provider settings, including multi-site acute care, rehabilitation and community care.
  • Guerriero is a strong champion and advocate for all of Niagara Health’s staff and physicians and for including patient experiences and perspectives in decision-making.
