  • Niagara’s unemployment rate increased from 10.8% in May to 11.5% in June, while the national unemployment rate decreased from the previous month to 7.8%. (610 CKTB)
  • Several Regional councillors slammed Dr. Mustafa Hirji for his comments to the media that the border should remained closed this summer. Some councillors claimed that Hirji, who is Niagara’s acting medical officer of health, was outside of his jurisdiction despite the fact that Hirji’s comments were related to the health risks of reopening the border. Niagara receives $10.5M for affordable housing

  • Federal Minister Ahmed Hussen announced today that Niagara will receive $10.5 million for 41 new affordable housing units in Niagara.
  • At the end of June, there were nearly 7,000 individuals and families waiting for geared-to-income housing.
  • Residents who live in these units will not have to pay more than 30 per cent of their income to secure a home.
  • The $10.5 million announced today will allow the Region to continue to provide critical support to those most at risk of becoming homeless.

  • The province’s vaccine rollout is ahead of schedule with more than half of Ontario adults now fully vaccinated against COVID-19. (Thorold News)
  • Dr. Mustafa Hirji said that unvaccinated people will soon face an increased risk of illness. Once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, people will start interacting with each other more which will allow the COVID-19 virus, including the Delta variant, to spread more easily.   • Dr. Mustafa Hirji does not want the U.S.-Canada border to open until the fall as he believes it’s too risky to reopen the border this summer, especially with the Delta variant spreading in parts of the midwestern U.S. (Toronto Star)
  • The City of Thorold will be installing Wi-Fi within the Battle of Beaverdams Park which will be able to accommodate up to 200 internet users at the same time. The cost to the City will be $30,000 for installation cost and annual costs of about $8,000. (Thorold Today)
  • The average house sale price was $655,200 in June, an increase of 1.1% compared to May. However, new real estate listings were down slightly and fewer homes sold in June compared to the previous month. (St. Catharines Standard)
