Canada Summer Games gets additional $1.1 million

  • The federal government announced it will be funding an additional $1.1 million to support the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.
  • The additional money is expected to help cover the extra costs resulting from the pandemic.

  • Federal officials are warning that Canada could be on the brink of a fourth wave of COVID-19 driven by the highly contagious Delta variant if the country opens too fast before enough people have been vaccinated. (City News)
  • While it’s not clear when the province will move out of Step 3, Ontario has announced that when it does the vast majority of public health measures, including capacity limits, will be lifted.  However, masks will continue to be required for indoor public settings. (610 CKTB)
  • The province has announced redevelopment plans for Ontario Place in Toronto. The facility will operate year-round and include an indoor water park and spa, a botanical garden, eight acres of free park and beaches; a larger redeveloped amphitheatre for year-round live events and an adventure park with obstacle courses, ziplines, climbing walls and rentals for kayaks and canoes.   • The City of St. Catharines has sent a cease-and-desist letter to a community led group that attempted to turn the fire-destroyed property of a former knife factory into a skate park. The city said while they appreciate the effort of the group, there are liability, insurance and safety concerns with the skatepark which is on city owned property. (Niagara this Week)
  • The Canadian women’s eight rowing crew has captured gold at the Tokyo Olympics. One of the members of the team is Kristen Kit of St. Catharines. (St. Catharines Standard)
  • Niagara’s acting medical officer of health, Dr. Mustafa Hirji, said the COVID-19 Delta variant is likely to blame for severe cases, fatalities and intensive care unit admissions related to COVID-19. The victim of the region’s most recent COVID-19 death had received both doses of vaccine but still succumbed to the virus. (St. Catharines Standard)
  • The Canadian Federation of Independent Business called on the province to communicate its plans for pandemic rules after Step 3 and how it will respond if infections spike again. The group said that many businesses are just handing on and need to know what the pathway is to remove the remaining restrictions and what restrictions will by kept in place. (Global News)

Niagara receives $2 million in direct federal support for tourism sector

  • Niagara Economic Development has secured and awarded $2 million in direct funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario to support Niagara’s tourism industry in its recovery from COVID-19.
  • The funding provided 167 Niagara tourism-dependent businesses with up to $20,000 in non-repayable contributions to support costs associated with adapting and eventually reopening, such as space renovations and retrofits, purchase of equipment and fixtures, personal protective equipment, and support for technology and digitization.
  • The program is being delivered in partnership with Niagara’s Economic Rapid Response Team, and is estimated to help maintain 325 jobs.

Niagara Parks Power Station landmark attraction opens Friday

  • Beginning on Friday, the historic former hydroelectric power plant in Niagara Falls will open to the public.
  • Through repurposed artifacts, interactive exhibits and interpretive installations, guests will learn first-hand how this hydropower pioneer harnessed the power of Niagara Falls to generate electricity.
  • The attraction will have daytime guided and self-guided tours daily from July 30 to August 15 and then will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for the remainder of August.
  • In September, Niagara Parks will launch a brand-new immersive sight and sound night.
  • In the summer of 2022, guests will also have access to the underground infrastructure of the Power Station.
