  • According to CBC, the body found in Lake Ontario on Tuesday is that of Steve Nkusi, who went missing in the water on Saturday at Sunset Beach in St. Catharines. (CBC News)
  • After being forced to host virtual only events last year, the In The Soil Multiple (p)Arts festival is back live and will run from August 27 to August 29 in downtown St. Catharines. (Thorold News)
  • The majority of Niagara’s new COVID-19 cases are from unvaccinated residents as partly vaccinated people were about four times more likely to get COVID-19 over the last four weeks and unvaccinated people were eight times more likely to get the virus. (St. Catharines Standard)

  • The city of Port Colborne will be hosting community movie nights at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park with movies on Aug. 24, Aug. 26, Sept. 14 and Sept. 16. Admission is free but people are encouraged to bring a canned food donation. (Niagara this Week)
  • Vaccinated and asymptomatic students and staff in select Niagara high schools who are exposed to COVID-19 will be given an at-home test as part of a pilot project set to begin next month. Participation in the program is voluntary. (Thorold Today)
  • Ice allocation will be a challenge this season in St. Catharines as the Merritton Arena is undergoing renovations and won’t be available until November and the Jack Gatecliff Arena is scheduled to be closed in January when the new twin-pad arena at Canada Games Park opens.   • Ontario’s chamber of commerce released guidance for private sector businesses seeking to develop COVID-19 proof-of-vaccination protocols. The organization believes implementing proof-of-vaccination would help businesses safely reopen and reduce the risk of further lockdowns. (CBC News)

Niagara Health announces mandatory vaccinations for new hires

  • Niagara Health announced today that as of Sept. 7, all new hires will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • This is in addition to last week’s announcement that will require staff, physicians, contractors, learners/students, and volunteers to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or written proof of a medical reason for not being fully vaccinated or to participate in mandatory education about the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Hospitals will also be required to implement regular and mandatory testing of individuals who are not fully vaccinated.

Body found in Lake Ontario

  • Niagara Regional Police (NRPS) received a 911 call from a boater early this afternoon to report having found a body in Lake Ontario.
  • The NRPS Marine Unit responded to the Niagara-on-the-Lake location approximately 4 kms east of the Welland Canal and about 500m offshore and recovered the body of a male.
  • The body has been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for a post-mortem and positive identification.

Vaccination pop up clinic coming to Performing Arts Centre

  • Residents who need a first or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine are invited to pop in to an upcoming Niagara Region Public Health clinic at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in downtown St. Catharines.
  • The clinics will take place Saturday, Aug. 28 from noon to 8:45 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until supply runs out).
  • Anyone who is 12+ or turning 12 this year (born on or before Dec. 31, 2009) is eligible to get a shot at the clinic.
