River Lions close regular season with victory

  • The Niagara River Lions completed the Canadian Elite Basketball League regular season Sunday afternoon by defeating the visiting Ottawa BlackJacks 89-79.
  • Niagara finished the regular season with a 10-4 record, including going 6-1 at home.
  • Next up for the team is the league championship semifinals Friday, Aug. 20 at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
  • The team will leave for Alberta Aug. 17.

St. Catharines Athletics win league championship

  • Last night, the St. Catharines Jr. A Athletics defeated the Brampton Excelsiors 14-13 to capture the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League Championship.
  • This was the first championship for the Athletics since the 2003 season.
  • Due to COVID, the OJLL season was replaced with a single-site tournament that took place over the past 3 weekends at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre.
  • Normally, the Athletics would now advance to the Minto Cup, which is the Canadian Jr. A lacrosse championship.
  • However, due to COVID the Minto Cup has been cancelled.

Welland Jackfish give up big lead to lose in extra innings

  • The Welland Jackfish gave up an 11-6 lead heading into the 9th inning and eventually lost 13-12 to the Hamilton Cardinals.
  • The Cardinals scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 11-11.
  • In the 10th inning, the Jackfish scored a single run but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals would score 2 runs for the extra inning win.
  • The Jackfish are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Kitchener to take on the Panthers at 2 p.m.

Niagara River Lions clinch second place

  • The Niagara River Lions have clinched second place in the CEBL regular season after defeating the Hamilton Honey Badgers on Thursday night in Hamilton.
  • As the second playoff seed, the River Lions will receive a bye into the semi-finals at the 2021 CEBL Championship Weekend that will be played in Edmonton. 
  • However before travelling to Edmonton, the River Lions are back home at the Meridian Centre for their regular season-finale against the Ottawa Blackjacks (4-8) Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Welland Jackfish defeat Barrie in extra innings

  • The Welland Jackfish fell behind three times Thursday night at home against Barrie but scored three runs in the 10th inning to defeat the Baycats 8-7.
  • Eric Marriott went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s, a stolen base and a run for Welland.
  • With the win, the Jackfish inch closer to the .500 mark and now have a 6-7 record.
  • The Jackfish are back in action Friday when they travel to Hamilton.
  • The team also announced the signing of catcher Owen Diodati of Niagara Falls, who plays for the University of Alabama and earlier this summer played in the Cape Cod League.

Niagara River Lions defeat Hamilton 84-81

  • The Niagara River Lions defeated the Hamilton Honey Badgers 84-81 Friday night in Hamilton.
  • Thomas Scrubb led the River Lions with 24 points including 4 three pointers.
  • The River Lions are back in action on Sunday when they host the Ottawa Black Jacks at 2 p.m. at the Meridian Centre.
  • Sunday’s game will be the last game of the regular season for the River Lions.

Vaccines mandatory in the fall for all Brock student-athletes

  • Brock University has announced that all student-athletes on a varsity or club team roster must be fully vaccinated in order to compete in the 2021-22 season.
  • The decision follows Brock’s announcement  that all students living in on-campus residences must also be fully vaccinated.

Niagara River Lions defeat Hamilton 100-77

  • The Niagara River Lions defeated the Hamilton Honey Badgers 100-77 Tuesday night at the Meridian Centre.
  • Thomas Scrubb led the River Lions with 22 points while Lloyd Pandi and Philip Scrubb each had 20 points.
  • The River Lions next game is Thursday when they travel to Hamilton to take on the Honey Badgers again.

Christian Young leads Welland Jackfish to a 7-1 win

  • Christian Young struck out a season-high 16 batters to lead the Welland Jackfish to a 7-1 win in Barrie Saturday night.
  • Young’s 16 strikeouts set a single-season Jackfish record.
  • The win improved the Jackfish’s record to 5-7.
  • The Jackfish play again Thursday, August 5th at 7:30 p.m. at the Welland Stadium as they welcome the Barrie Baycats.
