Jackfish drop game in Kitchener

  • After getting rained out at home on Saturday, the Welland Jackfish travelled to Kitchener on Sunday to take on the Kitchener Panthers.
  • The Jackfish fell to the Panthers 18-7.
  • For the Jackfish, Dane Tofteland went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs.
  • The Jackfish’s next game is at the Welland Stadium Thursday at 7:30pm against the Panthers once again.
  • On Tuesday, the Jackfish announced that they have signed right-handed pitcher and five-time IBL Champion, Brett Lawson, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2001.

Grand slam carries Jackfish to win

  • The Welland Jackfish scored 5 runs in the 4th inning to defeat the Brantford Red Sox 10-7 at Welland Stadium Thursday night.
  • Tony Kwonm hit a two out grand slam home run over the left-field wall in the 4th inning to erase a 5-1 deficit.
  • The Jackfish added a pair of runs in the 7th and 8th innings.
  • The Jackfish are back in action at home on Saturday afternoon against the Barrie Baycats at 1:05pm.
  • Step 3 of Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopen now permits the Jackfish to have a capacity of 2130, which is 75% of seated capacity at the Welland Stadium.

River Lions welcome back fans to Meridian Centre

  • The Niagara River Lions announced that fans can return to the Meridian Centre starting Saturday, July 17th for all six remaining home games.
  • Season ticket holders will have exclusive access for this Saturday’s game versus Hamilton, while the general public will be able to purchase tickets for the game on Tuesday, July 20th.
  • All fans will be required to complete a screening prior to entry and wear a mask inside the venue.
  • Capacity will be limited to 1000 spectators. 
  • Tickets go on sale Friday at 10:00am on ticketmaster.ca, by calling 289-273-5905 or emailing tickets@riverlions.ca or at the River Lions Front Office in Thorold.  

Welland Jackfish go 1-2 over weekend

  • The Welland Jackfish had a win and a pair of losses over the weekend in Intercounty Baseball League action.
  • On Friday, the Jackfish added three runs in the ninth to knock off the Brantford Red Sox 7-2 in Brantford.
  • On Saturday, the Jackfish loss to the London Majors 16-3 in their first home game after their scheduled home opener was rained out.
  • Finally on Sunday,  Dane Tofteland, Matt Hilderbrandt and Todd Gowan all hit home runs but it wasn’t enough as the Jackfish fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs 18-7.
  • The Jackfish next play Thursday at 7:30pm at home to Brantford.

River Lions clipped by Honey Badgers 78-76

  • The Hamilton Honey Badgers (6-1) erased a 17-point second-half deficit to shock the Niagara River Lions (3-3) by a score of 78-76 on Sunday afternoon at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton.
  • Niagara only shot 35% from the field, including an abysmal 4-29 (13%) from beyond the arc. 
  • Xavier Sneed led Niagara with 20 points while Daniel Waldin-Mullings had 13 points along with six rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. 
  • The River Lions will have a rematch against the Honey Badgers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at home in the Meridian Centre.

River Lions win home opener over Fraser Valley

  • The Niagara River Lions (3-2) scored 37 points in the third quarter on their way to a 103-82 victory over the Fraser Valley Bandits (4-1) at the Meridian Centre on Thursday evening. 
  • The River Lions used a 20-2 run near the start of the third period to pull away from the Bandits.
  • Xavier Sneed led the way for Niagara with 20 points while Jaylen Babb-Harrison provided 19 points and Javin DeLaurier had 18 points and 17 rebounds.
  • Niagara will now travel to Hamilton on Sunday to play the Honey Badgers at 2:00 pm.

Jackfish home opener rained out

  • The Welland Jackfish and Hamilton Cardinals were postponed due to rain on Thursday night at Welland Stadium.
  • The game will be made up on Wednesday, August 11th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
  • The Jackfish home opener will now take place on Saturday, July 10th as they welcome the London Majors for a 1pm start.
