Swiss defenceman commits to Niagara IceDogs

  • The Niagara IceDogs have received a commitment from Swiss defenceman Rodwin Dionicio.
  • Dionicio was selected 18th overall in the first round of the 2021 CHL Import Draft.
  • Dionicio spent the past season with the Bern U17 and U20 programs in Switzerland’s U17 and U20 Elite leagues, where he tallied four goals and 20 points in 41 games combined between the two leagues. 
  • He also represented the Swiss National Team at the U17 and U18 levels, appearing in 10 game.
  • Dionicio will be representing Switzerland at the 2021 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup in August, a tournament featuring the top U18 players in the world.

Niagara River Lions defeated at home 92-82 against the Guelph Nighthawks

  • On Friday, the Guelph Nighthawks (3-8) defeated the Niagara River Lions (6-4) 92-82 at the Meridian Centre.
  • The River Lions will travel to Guelph on Sunday to face the Nighthawks again before returning to the Meridian Centre Tuesday, August 3 for a 7pm game against the Hamilton Honey Badgers.

Welland Jackfish fall to Brantford 7-3

  • The Welland Jackfish fell to the Brantford Red Sox 7-3 Thursday night at the Welland Stadium.
  • With the lose, the Jackfish now have 3 wins and 7 losses.
  • The Jackfish now hit the road for a pair of road games, playing the London Majors on Friday and the Barrie Baycats on Saturday.

Forrest named interim coach of Brock men’s hockey team

Williamson steps down as head coach to return to OHL
  • With the opportunity to head back to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Marty Williamson is stepping down as head coach of the Brock men’s hockey team.
  • The Barrie Colts announced today that Williamson has accepted a new role as the OHL team’s head coach and general manager.
  • He will, however, remain affiliated with Brock University as head scout of the Badgers men’s hockey team.
  • Badgers assistant coach Kevin Forrest will serve as Brock’s interim head coach for the upcoming 2021-22 Ontario University Athletics season with a nationwide search for a permanent replacement expected next spring.

Welland Jackfish announce make-up date

  • The Welland Jackfish have announced the make-up date from the Saturday, July 17 rainout against the Barrie Baycats.
  • The game will be made up on Friday, September 3 at 7:30 p.m.

River Lions add players

  • The Niagara River Lions have added two new players this week.
  • On Monday, the River Lions signed Jaylon Tate, a 6’3” guard from Chicago, Illinois.
  • Tate played in Niagara in 2017 and earned NBL Canada Rookie of the Year honours.
  • Today, the River Lions signed Thomas (Tommy) Scrubb, who is a 6’6 forward from Richmond, British Columbia.
  • Scrubb brings a wealth of international and professional experience having played in top leagues across Europe as well as suiting up for the Canadian National Team on several occasions

Jackfish fall to Kitchener and London

  • On Thursday at the Welland Stadium, the Welland Jackfish recorded 12 hits but could only score 3 runs as they fell to the Kitchener Panthers 6-3.
  • Friday evening the Jackfish travelled to London to take on the Majors. The Jackfish had only 2 hits and committed a pair of errors in a 5-0 loss to London.
  • The Jackfish are back in action Saturday at 1:05pm at the Welland Stadium against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Niagara River Lions defeat Saskatchewan 86-74

  • Jaylen Babb Harrison led the way with 25 points for the Niagara River Lions (5-3) in their 86-74 win over the Saskatchewan Rattlers (0-9) on Tuesday night at the Meridian Centre.
  • With the victory, Niagara has now won four of its last five games.
  • Javin DeLaurier put up another strong performance for Niagara, registering his fourth double-double of the season (17 points, 11 rebounds).
  • Next up for the Niagara River Lions is the Ottawa BlackJacks (3-5), who they will host on July 24 at 7:00 p.m. at the Meridian Centre.

Jackfish sign 2019 IBL Rookie of the Year

  • The Welland Jackfish announced today the signing of 2019 Intercounty Baseball League Rookie of the Year Brendon Dadson.
  • Dadson, who returns to the Jackfish following time spent in Australia and the United States, is currently finishing playing for the Wolfpac of the Yinzer League.
  • With the Wolfpac, Dadson recorded a .369 average with 8 doubles, 2 triples, a home run, and 19 RBIs in 27 games played.
  • The Jackfish are back in action on Thursday, July 22nd as they welcome the Kitchener Panthers to the Welland Stadium for a 7:30 pm game.
