U.S. extends land border restrictions until Aug. 21

  • The U.S. says it will extend its current land border restrictions until Aug. 21, days after the Canadian government announced it would permit fully vaccinated Americans into Canada for discretionary purposes beginning Aug. 9.
  • “…the risk of continued transmission and spread of the virus associated with COVID-19 between the United States and Canada poses an ongoing ‘specific threat to human life or national interests'”, according to a notice posted by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by saying that it’s not up to Canada to “dictate” how and when the U.S. decides to reopen its borders.
